Procedure Information

Metabolism Scans

Our metabolism scanning procedure is easy, non-invasive, and designed to provide precise insights into your metabolism.

During the scan, you'll either wear a specialised mask or lay under a canopy while breathing room air. There are no gases or needles involved, ensuring your comfort throughout the process. The scan takes approximately ten minutes, during which time you simply relax. Once complete, the dietitian will analyse and interpret the results to help create a personalised plan.

  • Before your scan, ensure you have not eaten, had caffeine, or exercised for at least four hours. Ideally, no exercise for 24 hours prior to your scan is best. Normal fluid intake is fine, just avoid drinking large amounts of water immediately before the scan.

  • Meet your diagnostic dietitian who will ask you some general questions, take you through the procedure and complete your measurements. This will help ensure accurate results based on your current health status.

  • Once fitted with the mask or canopy, you will lay on the treatment bed for roughly ten minutes whilst you relax. The procedure is designed to accommodate all levels of mobility and does not require you to lie on the bed.

  • If you were referred for the scan, your results will be sent to your clinician within one to two business days. If you are a direct patient, your dietitian will go through the results with you immediately after the scan, explaining what they mean and what the next steps are for your personalised care plan.

To ensure the best results from your metabolic scan, follow these preparation tips:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours before your scan.

  • Refrain from eating, drinking caffeine, or exercising for at least 4 hours prior to your scan. If it’s safe for you, fasting for more than 4 hours is ideal.

  • You can drink water as usual, just try not to consume large amounts immediately before the scan.

BI-Spectroscopy Body Composition Scans

Our BI-Spectroscopy body composition scan is a simple, non-invasive method for accurately assessing your body composition and identifying potential malnutrition. This clinically accurate method is far superior to traditional weight tracking, revealing the full picture when it comes to muscle mass, fat distribution, and hydration levels.

The procedure involves placing small electrodes on your ankles and wrists while you lie down and relax for about ten minutes.

We often recommend doing both the metabolic scan and the BI-spectroscopy scan together, as they complement each other, providing a complete picture of your health.

  • Similar to the metabolic scan, it’s best to avoid food and exercise for at least 4 hours before your appointment. It’s also important to empty your bladder just before the scan and refrain from drinking large amounts of water during the 4 hours prior.

  • Upon arrival, you’ll meet with your diagnostic dietitian, who will ask you a few general questions and explain the procedure. They’ll also take some initial measurements to ensure your scan is as accurate as possible.

  • Once the electrodes are attached to your wrists and ankles, you’ll lie down on the treatment bed for roughly ten minutes while the scan takes place. If you have mobility issues or use a wheelchair, you won’t need to transfer to the bed—you can remain comfortably seated for the scan. Scan can also be completed for those with amputations.

  • If you were referred for the scan, your results will be sent to your clinician within one to two business days. For direct patients, your Diagnostic Dietitian will discuss the results with you immediately after the procedure, explaining what they mean for your body composition and health.

For optimal results from your body composition scan, please follow these preparation guidelines:

  • Avoid eating, drinking caffeine, or exercising for at least 4 hours before your appointment.

  • It’s best to empty your bladder just before the scan to ensure accuracy.

  • You can drink water as usual but avoid consuming large quantities immediately before the scan.

NDIS Consultation and Support

Our initial NDIS consultation and support session is designed specifically for individuals who do not yet have Dietitian funding in their NDIS plan but believe they would benefit from professional dietetic care. In this free, 20-minute session, you will meet with one of our expert dietitians to see if they are the right fit for your needs. During this time, our dietitian will conduct a brief assessment to understand how best to support your health and nutritional needs and prepare a Nutrition Advocacy Report to submit to the NDIS, advocating for dietetic funding on your behalf.

We provide Specialist Dietetics Services via the NDIS for the following areas:

  • Tube Feeding: Any condition that necessitates the use of a feeding tube

  • Autism related Gastrointestinal conditions: Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, POTS, MCAS

  • For other non-specified areas, please enquire to see if our services are right for you or if we can recommend another service that will better suit your needs

For patients who already have NDIS funding in place for dietetic services, we recommend booking a full consultation right away instead of the planning session.

  • Before your planning session, you’ll receive a pre-assessment form to complete. This form helps us gather important background information about your health and nutritional needs, enabling our Dietitian to conduct a more focused and personalised assessment during the session. The details you provide will also guide your Dietitian in writing the Nutrition Advocacy Report for NDIS funding.

  • For patients who find it difficult to travel to our clinic, we offer Telehealth consultations. This convenient option allows you to meet with your Dietitian virtually, but we encourage all patients to come in for diagnostic scans and assessments when possible. In certain cases, we may offer home visits, though this is assessed on a case-by-case basis depending on your location and needs.

  • Even if you are not part of the NDIS, we welcome patients who use feeding tubes from other funding sources such as private insurance, Transport Accident Commission (TAC), and Veterans' Affairs (DVA). We also see patients privately. If your funding isn’t listed, please contact us to discuss your options—we are happy to explore other avenues for ensuring you receive the care you need.

Metabolic Health Consultation

Our Metabolic Health Consultation is tailored to patients facing challenges related to weight management, metabolic disorders, PCOS and other associated conditions. In this session, you will meet with Joshua Morgan, APD, who specialises in medical nutrition therapy for a variety of metabolic health concerns, including:

  • Weight management difficulties

  • GLP-1 agonist therapy (such as Ozempic)

  • Fatty liver disease

  • Pre-diabetes and diabetes

  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

  • High cholesterol

  • High blood pressure

During your consultation, we will conduct a thorough assessment of your current health status and nutritional needs. Based on this evaluation, a personalised treatment plan will be developed to help manage your condition and improve your overall health.

Before your consultation, you'll receive a pre-assessment form to help us gather essential details about your medical history, diet, and lifestyle. For those unable to visit our clinic, Telehealth consultations are available, though some diagnostic scans must be done in person for accuracy. What sets MNT Diagnostics apart is our exclusive access to advanced nutrition diagnostic machinery designed to help those with metabolic conditions.

We accept NDIS, Private, EPC, and DVA funding, and are happy to discuss other funding options if needed.

EDS, POTS, MCAS Consultation

Our EDS, POTS, and MCAS Consultation is designed to support patients managing the complexities of these rare and often challenging conditions. We offer consultations for patients diagnosed or suspecting a diagnosis for:

  • Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)

  • Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)

  • Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)

With most patients experiencing formal diagnoses after years of specialist consultations, these conditions tend to be overlooked and not managed effectively. If you’re suspecting a diagnosis of one of these conditions or have been diagnosed already, book a consultation with our specialist dietitian. We can help create an effective and ongoing plan to manage symptoms through diet and supplements whilst you await a formal diagnosis and/or clinical treatment.

Prior to your consultation, we'll send you a pre-assessment form to collect important information about your health history, diet, and lifestyle. If visiting our clinic is difficult, we offer Telehealth consultations, though some diagnostic scans will need to be done in person for accuracy. We accept NDIS, Private, EPC, and DVA funding and can explore other funding options upon request.

Post-Scan Ongoing Support

At MNT Diagnostics, we believe that receiving your scan results is the start of your journey. Our dedicated team provides ongoing care tailored to your unique needs, whether you're managing a clinical condition, optimising tube-feeding nutrition, or focusing on overall health and weight management.

We take a personalised approach to your care, ensuring you receive the right support every step of the way. Based on your scan results, our expert dietitians will develop a customised treatment plan that aligns with your body’s specific requirements. We’ll continue to monitor your progress through regular consultations and follow-up scans, making adjustments to ensure the best possible outcomes for your health.

If your scan was requested by another healthcare provider, we will pass your results directly to them to ensure your continued care. This allows your referring clinician to incorporate the findings into your ongoing treatment plan, with the insights from our diagnostic dietitians included to offer a well-rounded approach to your care.
