BI-Spectroscopy Body Composition Scans Gold Coast
At MNT Diagnostics, one of our body composition scans utilises BI-Spectroscopy (BIS) technology to provide precise and comprehensive insights into your overall health. This advanced testing measures key factors such as muscle mass, fat distribution, and hydration levels. Understanding these metrics is crucial for optimising health, managing clinical conditions, or supporting weight management goals.
Our service is available from our centrally located clinic in Robina on the Gold Coast, accessible to individuals of all levels of mobility. Whether you're managing a medical condition, improving your fitness, or monitoring your health, our body composition analysis can be the best first step to guide your care with accuracy.
Why BIS Technology For Body Composition?
We utilise cutting-edge SECA 525 MBCA technology for BI-Spectroscopy body composition analysis. This advanced technology offers scientifically accurate measurements, providing critical insights into your body’s internal structure.
BI-Spectroscopy is completely non-invasive and radiation-free, making it extremely safe and the most accessible option for regular monitoring. It offers an alternative to our DEXA body composition scans for patients who are sensitive to radiation, pregnant women or young children that don’t have an indication for DEXA scan. Additionally, for those who cannot mobilise out of a mobility device.
Our BI-Spectroscopy scans offer a detailed breakdown of key health metrics, including:
Skeletal muscle mass: Essential for monitoring muscle gain or muscle wasting, especially for cases of malnutrition, fitness enthusiasts, and athletes.
Fat-free mass: A critical indicator of overall health, showing the proportion of your body that is made of lean tissue such as muscle, organs and bone.
Body water compartments: Evaluates both intracellular and extracellular water levels, providing insights into hydration and inflammation status. This is an area that a traditional DEXA scan does not measure and is independent to BIS scan.
Visceral fat: A key measure of fat stored around the organs, which is crucial for understanding cardiovascular and metabolic health risks.
Our SECA 525 MBCA’s precision makes it an ideal tool for tracking changes over time, supporting both clinical and fitness-related goals.
What To Expect
Preparation
To ensure accurate results, it’s best to avoid food and exercise for at least 4 hours before the scan. Please empty your bladder before the procedure to help with the accuracy of the results. Drinking water is fine but avoid excessive fluid intake just before the scan.
Set-Up
Upon arrival, you'll meet with our dietitian who will conduct a brief health assessment, take measurements, and explain the scan process. This ensures the procedure is tailored to your specific health needs.
The Scan
The scan is non-invasive and completely painless. Electrodes will be placed on your wrists and ankles while you relax on a treatment bed for approximately 10 minutes. You won’t need to remove any clothing other than your shoes and socks. For patients using mobility devices, the scan can be conducted without the need to transfer from your device. The scan can also be completed for those with amputations.
Results
Once the scan is complete, you'll receive a comprehensive report on the same day. This report provides a detailed breakdown of your body composition, including muscle mass, fat distribution, and hydration levels. If you were referred by a clinician, the report will be sent to them within one business day. If you're a direct patient, your dietitian will go through the results with you and provide recommendations based on your specific health goals.
Why Body Composition Testing is Important for Your Health
Body composition testing offers critical insights into your health that go beyond what a standard scale or BMI measurement can provide. These scans are essential for a variety of reasons:
Weight Management: Understanding the breakdown of fat, water and muscle in your body allows for a more effective weight management plan. Instead of just focusing on losing weight, the scan helps you target fat loss while preserving muscle mass, ensuring a healthier approach.
Clinical Care: For patients dealing with conditions like malnutrition, sarcopenia, or metabolic disorders, body composition analysis provides a precise assessment that helps clinicians develop targeted nutrition and treatment plans. We also specialise in tube-feeding nutrition.
Athletic Performance: Athletes and fitness enthusiasts benefit from body composition scans to track muscle gain, fat loss, and hydration levels. These insights can help fine-tune training regimens and nutrition plans to optimise performance and recovery.
Our BI-Spectroscopy technology is backed by scientific research and used in clinical settings worldwide. The data from these scans help create personalised health plans that are grounded in clinical accuracy, giving you and your healthcare provider a comprehensive view of your health. Outside of the intensive care unit (ICU) of hospitals, we’re the only clinic on the Gold Coast offering this service.
In addition to our BI-Spectroscopy scans, we are soon offering DEXA body composition scans for patients.
A Better Diagnostic Tool Than Inbody Scans
While InBody scans and other Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) tools are commonly used for body composition testing inside gyms and fitness centres, our BI-Spectroscopy technology offers a more advanced and precise alternative.
Unlike traditional BIA, which uses a single frequency, BIS uses multiple frequencies to precisely measure not only muscle mass and fat distribution but also intracellular and extracellular water levels. This provides clearer insights into hydration, inflammation, and overall body composition, making BIS a more reliable tool for clinical use.
If you’re seeking the most comprehensive body composition analysis, BIS is the better choice.
